NorthGate Community Development Project
NorthGate Community Development Project is located in the remote north of Tanna Island, Vanuatu. Established in 1991 by Liberty for the Nations Australia partnering with the Vanuatu Assemblies of God, the project has brought significant change to the region.
'NorthGate' is a substantial settlement including cyclone-proof school buildings and student accommodation, staff and visitors' housing, a health clinic outpost, church meeting place, machinery and tool sheds, water tanks, solar and generator power and an open sea boat. A large area of fenced land contains cleared pasture land, sown with various grass varieties for the sizeable herd of cattle. Agricultural development has included trialling various crops to increase the variety of garden produce. The facilities are regularly used by groups such as the Health Department and aid groups for training and assistance programs.
Teams from Australia visit regularly, to build and maintain the facilities and equipment, help in the school, provide medical care and vocational training, and assist with local evangelism.
NorthGate Community Christian School is central in the life of the Development Project. Students come from villages nearby including John Frum cargo cult and custom villages, which have traditionally isolated their children from outside influences. The school has a reputation in Vanuatu for having brought significant breakthrough to North Tanna.
